Competitions:

I wrote up some details about the first few competitions:

March 2024 Rubik’s Cube Competition

Jonah competed in DFW Megacomp 2024, March 16-17, 2024, in Grapevine.

He competed in 6x6, 5x5, 4x4, 3x3, 2x2, one-handed, and blindfolded, although some of those were just to see if he could get an official time. For 3x3, he ranked 29th in the final round, out of 172 competitors. His best average of 5 was 11.31 seconds.

And he finally got a sub-10 second solve in competition – 9.55. Here’s a video of that:

But the real excitement was that Max Park was there. He holds many cubing records, including the 3x3 single fastest time in competition, at 3.13 seconds. He is number 1 in the WCA rankings for 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, 6x6, and 7x7.

So it was exciting just to see him compete. When he competed in 5x5, Jonah was a judge in that round, and he texted me: “Video it if I judge Max.” And then he did judge Max. And then Max set the 5x5 world record! Here’s the video:

Later, Max’s dad told Jonah they are starting a new tradition when he sets a record. Whoever judged the record, they give him Max’s hand warmers – autographed. Crazy!

August 2023 Rubik’s Cube Competition

Jonah competed in Pretzel Mania Dallas 2023, August 26-27, 2023, in Arlington.

He competed in 3x3, 2x2, and one-handed. For 3x3, he ranked 26th out of 242 competitors. His best average of 5 was 12.62 seconds (and his goal was to get under 13).

Here’s a video of one of his better 3x3 solves from the event, 11.71 seconds:

His best time was 11.27, but that video isn’t as good.

May 2023 Rubik’s Cube Competition

Jonah’s first competition, the World Cube Association’s “DFW Spring Warmup 2023” in Denton on May 6, 2023.

He competed in 3x3, 2x2, one-handed, 5x5, and Clock. For 3x3, he ranked 17th out of the 32 people at the competition.

Here’s a video of his best 3x3 solve from the event, 12.393 seconds:
